Brotherly Love
The film Brother is a very interesting film. It is definitely one of my favorites. The movie tracks the young man Danila in his journey through St. Petersburg. Danila is my favorite character in this movie. He is very strong from the beginning and he is not afraid to ask for what he wants. He is a very daring character, and I think that he is glad that he didn't see violence when he was working in the army, but he definitely does not have a problem with violence. He seems to know what he is doing right away. As soon as he starts working with his brother, he is making decisions on his own and killing people to protect himself. He is also very smart. He thinks ahead and knows what to do. He plans very well.
His relationships are very important in this film. He doesn't really have a deep relationship with his mother. We only see her at the beginning of the film, where we then see her tell Danila that she wishes he were more like his brother, and then she is mentioned only a few times more throughout the movie. Danila loves his brother, Viktor, very much and is very trusting of him. They work very well together. Even though Viktor puts his brother in danger throughout the entire film, he still feels very sorry for ratting him out and setting him up. Danila is very quick to forgive Viktor and then they both go their separate ways.
The two different girls that Danila gets involved with are very different from each other. Sveta is a very strong women, as we see her hold her ground very well and as she says she will deal with her abusive husband alone. She makes her own choices and is very wise. I personally thought that her and Danila were very good for each other. Danila definitely cared a lot for Sveta and made sure to take care of the things that he could. I am sad that in the end she made him leave, but without that we get to see Danila start to take care of his own. Cat is very different from Sveta. Although they are both independent, Cat does not really take things very seriously. I could tell that Danila did not really like her in any sort of romantic way. He did not want her and in the end when he gives her money, we see how he really just wants to take care of people.
At the end of this movie we see Danila get in to a truck as he is going to hitchhike out of the city. I really liked this ending because it leaves what happens to him in the end up to the viewer.

The differences between both of the women were notable and interesting to examine. Sveta reminded me of Russian women who are proper and give up their own desires to do the right thing by society standards whereas Cat goes through life by the beat of her own drum.
