Chapaev's unity
This was a very interesting film. I can see why it appealed much more to the Russians as opposed to Battle Potemkin. Chapaev has much more plot and character dynamic then Battle Potemkin. This film's story and plot have much more detail. You really get to know the characters better in this film. You are able to relate to the characters on a deeper level and it makes you connect with them. It also has romance in it. The relationships in this film are very, very strong. Anka's and Petka's relationship grows throughout the film. Towards the end of the film their romance is very strong. Audiences always really like romance especially if it is strong. Petka also has a strong relationship with Chapaev. They always sing songs together and they have a strong trust in each other. At the end of the film Petka goes back to save Chapaev. Chapaev also grew to have a strong relationship with his Commissar, Furmanov. In the beginning of this story they did not like each other and they disagreed a lot. But we are shown, when Furmanov has to leave to go to another camp, that they truly trusted each other and worked well together. I think that the relationships play a really big part in why this movie is so good.
The almost all of the past films that we have watched have been silent films and music has played a huge part in the films. I feel that coming to this class has helped me realize how big of a part music plays in film today as well as in silent films. In this film the music was less prominent but it still played a big part. The men would all sing songs and it really helped portray the sense of unity that the men all had. I believe that this is another reason why people really liked this film.

I like how you isolate just the relationship of Chapaev and Petka going into that background instead of trying to hit everyones and missing details.
ReplyDeleteI like how you mention the strong relationships between the characters in the film. Chapaev and Petka's relationship was such a bromance towards the end and it was so sad to see it end.
ReplyDeleteI liked what you said that the music used in this film was effective, but did not obviously stand out as much as the silent films. I think lack of music in exchange for dialogue is a good trade off. Great review.
