Moscow Believes in Women

I really liked this film. This film is very women-centric and all of the women in this film are very strong and have very prominent personalities. Right from the beginning we are focusing on women and about their stories. Lyuda is definitely in Moscow to pursue romance. However, she still has a very strong personality. She is bold in her words and she isn't afraid to lie. Tonya is in Moscow, it seems, to work and receive money. Tonya does start out with a boyfriend and obviously cares for him a lot. She is very gentle and caring. Katya is my favorite. She is strong and unapologetic. She is in Moscow to work and find a better life. All three of these girls are friends from the beginning and stay friends and take care of each other. I love how Tonya and Lyuda both come to take care of Katya when she is upset. I really appreciate the strong friendship between these three ladies.
The men in this story have strong personalities as well. Tonya's boyfriend, Kolya, is really nice and sweet. He has a caring and protective personality. He is my favorite of the men, because he protects what he believes and does not back down. Lyuda's boyfriend is sweet and sincere in the beginning. However, during the second half of this film, you see his troubling personailty. Despite overcoming his alcoholism, as he says he has, he did not truly redeem himself. Katya's first boyfriend, Rudolph, comes across as very strong and not in a good way. I wasn't fond of his personality from the very beginning. He was very forceful and especially on Katya. When they were being intimate, she asked him not to several times, but he kept going. She ends up pregnant and he leaves her to her own devices. I was extremely proud of Katya when Rudolph's mother visited her and yelled at her and then offered her money, because she denied the money and she did it on her own. Katya's second boyfriend, Gosha, is much better and he is my second favorite man in this film. He is very strong and stands firm in his beliefs. The only problem that I had with him is when he left for a week because he found out that Katya made more money than he did. Both Rudolph and Gosha were very headstrong, but Gosha didn't use it to abuse his power like Rudolph did.
I think that Katya and Gosha make a lot of sense together. They both are strong but can be weak. They both like to take care of themselves. They are very similar. This movie does a good job portraying the different types of relationships, healthy or not. I can see why this movie was so popular.

  1. I also enjoyed the different relationships that were portrayed in this film and the different types of people that fall into those relationships.

  2. I agree with you that Katya and Gosha belong with each other, it sort of seemed to me at points that, while they won't admit it, they really do another person in their life and they do really like each other, while they may not say it to each other its there and it is very nice to watch unfold.

  3. I also actually really liked seeing women as the focus of the film. I would almost argue the men were portrayed more often as fools, not the women. Did women have much authority during the thaw and stagnation periods? Remembering what Katya's love interest at the end of the film said, how men should have the authority, perhaps this is how people thought during those times.

  4. I agree that Katya was a strong personality in this film; but only until she fell in love with Gosha. With Rudolph, she was strong and did not relent when it came to him leaving. When Gosha told her to never raise her voice at him again and threatened to leave, she instantly apologized. I found this confusing with her overall personality and how she handled herself. It's like once he left for a week she completely fell apart. It was interesting they added that part.

  5. I'm not sure if finding love was Lyuda's, to me she seemed more of an adventurer than just wanting to find love.
